The Fourth monkey is a collection of poetry by Lakshmy Menon Chatterjee and it represents Lakshmy’s thoughts, observations, frustration and inspiration. Most of her poems are based on social issues, relationships or nature. Lakshmy has penned down these poems with a purpose, be it to speak against critical issues, contemplation of relationships or appreciate the beauty of nature. The paintings and photographs contained in this book are also produced by Lakshmy.
- Beautiful collection of poems.
- Short and crispy.
- Contains various emotions and issues.
- Provides a new perspective.
I was a bit curious when I heard about this poetry book. I have read some poetry books from Indian authors and they were quite good. So, automatically, expectations were high from this book.
This book stood tall to all the expectations. Being an ardent lover of poetry, this book really fascinated me. From the very first poem, Lakshmy sets the mood for an exhilarating ride ahead. She guides the reader through various emotions, issues and beauty of life. The paintings and photographs by Lakshmy serve as cherry on the cake.
I didn’t complete this book in one go. It is not meant to be. With every poem, there’s a lot to take in. The momentary realization that each poem brings is something worth experiencing. Lot of people just neglects poetries because of their complicated structure and even complicated meaning. But with this book, there is nothing to worry about. Lakshmy has compiled these poems in quite a simple way. The reader can actually enjoy the poems without wondering about the alternative meaning because all the poems are up to the point.
Like the goddess herself, Lakshmy brings smile and happiness with this book. It is a lovely compilation of poems. The book is neatly divided into 5 sections namely – Appreciation, Contemplation, Frustration, Inspiration and Observation. Some of the poems which I really liked(relative to others) are :
A Moment of Happiness which contains a beautiful message blended with the poetic aroma. The poem is subtle but leaves an impact on the reader.
Unconditional is something that would surely make you smile. Beautifully structured, this poem is something that most of us can connect with.
Natural Alchemy blends in with the beauty of nature to provide a charming reflection of everything happening around us.
Mirrors Do Lie – Simply because I could connect with it instantly.
The Fourth Monkey – Of course, the title poem. A concept which is neatly mingled with a universal message.
Final Call because the poem has something deep that stirs something deep in you.
A Dark Heritage – An appealing story beautifully told in the form of a prose. In this Lakshmy touches a critical topic.
Vision of Dawn – No good reason. Just loved it.
Armed to Disarm – Just amazing.
Like any other poetry collection, this book is a perspective window through which we see things from a different angle, one formulated and crafted by the poetess. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone who loves poetry, with a purpose. *wink*
In the end, a few lines dedicated to the book and the poetess:
One Sunday afternoon I behold
Some letters printed loud and bold
The Fourth Monkey, story old
Amazing journey ahead, foretold
Various shades of love and life
From a tender mother & lovely wife
Poetry or Realism, What to tell?
Poetry with a purpose, Rings a bell!
A journey indeed of highs & lows
And in the end the reader bows
For the beauty of art is truly justified
With reader left in awe, satisfied
